A coach and his player

When people ask me what I do for a living, I usually reply, “I’m a life coach and a writer.” The later part they understand - everybody knows what a writer does. We write things. But more often than not, they stumble over that first response.

“A what?” they ask.

“A life coach,” I reply.

And the deer-caught-in-the-headlights look I get in return lets me know that they still don’t have a clue what I’m talking about.

How to make them understand?

“I help people figure out what’s wrong with their lives and how to fix them” sounds a bit pompous to me, so that’s out.

“I help people find balance in their lives so that they’re happy.” Gee, that’s all we need, more happy shiny people to fill the world with their endless smiles.

“I help people take their dreams and make them a reality.” Ah, that sounds good. I think I’ll go with that.

And usually it works.

Until they think about it for a minute and ask, “How do you do that?”

Life coaching is perhaps the most fulfilling job I’ve ever had. Working with people to help them find balance and fulfillment in their own lives helps me find those same qualities in my own. Seeing someone reach beyond themselves, do things they never thought possible, turn those dreams into living, breathing reality is simply too cool to put into words.

My coaching practice, Xtremelifecoaching.com, is predicated on the idea that life is an adventure and that we should all be living it as fully as we possibly can. I’m going to use this blog to talk about doing just that - pursuing life to its fullest!
